Members Corner: SB918 Failed, My thoughts on how this is being portrayed to the People of California
By: Karla Talley, Executive Director Inland Empire Gun Owners
SB 918 FAILED to obtain the votes to pass, 52 yay 23 Nay. (54 yay votes were required to pass this Bill).
This is great news, but the fight is still going strong and there is still A LOT of work ahead of us. I don’t think this will go away so easily unless we are able to flip the House and Senate in Nov.
So, I have a lot of issues with this Bill, anyone who knows me can attest to that fact. SB 918 that was written and brought to the floor by Democratic Sen. Anthony Portantino, who pushed for the bill along with Attorney General Rob Bonta.
This Bill should be a wake-up call for everyone who is not already in the fight to protect our Second Amendment rights and you should be concerned just how easy it is for these so called “lawmakers” to remove your God given rights with the sweep of a pen.
These “lawmakers” lie and mislead the people of California and their constituents for their own agenda. Take for example this statement made by Portantino “California was made less safe tonight by not passing the bill to make us consistent with the Supreme Court’s decision.” This Bill was EXACTLY what Chief Justice Thomas said they could not do. In his statement from the Supreme Court Decision, Chief Justice Thomas noted that “sensitive places” can’t be just whatever lawmakers decide. They must have historical precent. “So, I ask, how does it make them consistent with the Supreme Courts decision when it is in fact what they were told NOT to do?
Another statement made, this time by Bonta “There would be a huge influx of applicants now that the ‘just cause’ component has been struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court, and not enough safety precautions for the individuals who are seeking that,” Bonta said as he unsuccessfully pushed for the bill’s passage. “If this bill doesn’t pass, people who haven’t had a comprehensive safety evaluation can get a concealed weapon and bring it into (sensitive) places like schools, playgrounds, voting booths and sports stadiums.” So please explain how this statement is true… The ONLY thing the Supreme Courts decision did was remove the requirement for the Good Cause Statement. There is still a requirement for 8 hours of training by a County-approved firearms trainer and a comprehensive qualification test, covering gun laws and requiring proficiency with the firearm. You also still have an application process that includes fingerprinting, and a background check through the Department of Justice to make sure you have nothing in your past or present that would make you a threat to own or carry a firearm. So how does the good cause statement keep one safer? Answer: It doesn’t. Also, in his statement noted above, Bonta called out sensitive places “schools, playgrounds, voting booths and sports stadiums” these places already are considered “sensitive” places and that does NOT change. You still cannot take or wear your firearm on school property, voting booths (and the vicinity), and any Gov’t building, just to name a few.
I could go through the AP News article word for word with you and point out all the inconsistencies and the misinformation, but you get the point with the few things I have covered. The lawmakers that are trying so hard to mislead you and control you (and let’s face it that is what they are doing by telling you what you can and cannot do, what you can and cannot say) depend on the people of California to be too lazy to do their own research or to think for themselves and unfortunately a lot of the people are doing just that. We have the ability that our parents, grandparents and forefathers did not have with the internet and being able to research any topic that we choose, yet we do not use it. We allow others to think and speak for us and we believe everything they tell us as the golden word. But is it, really?
You have the power to change this. By getting in the fight by joining IEGO, subscribe to our newsletter to get our voter guide and help us elect officials that will protect your self-defense rights in November”
IEGO, OCGO & SDCGO Letter to DOJ demanding info on the data leak of CA CCW holders and their response.

November is right around the corner! Do you have any local candidates you want us to endorse or are you a candidate?
Endorsing candidates is an important part of the political process and is a big step towards Inland Empire Gun Owners goal of electing only people who respect our Second Amendment rights.
For IEGO, every day is election season and the next election is always right around the corner. IEGO is a unique political organization because we focus entirely on local Second Amendment issues. Because we are unique, it is important to understand the specifics of who, how, and why we endorse.
IEGO endorses only county and city level candidates. We do not endorse state or federal candidates because other organizations do a great job already and we do not want to duplicate efforts. We only endorse candidates for City Council, School Board, County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff, and other local boards like water, fire, etc.
IEGO’s Criteria for Endorsements:
1. The candidate’s stance on the Second Amendment and Second Amendment issues. Does the candidate oppose gun bans, ammunition registration, and accessory bans? Does the candidate support issuing carry permits for the purpose of self-defense? And will the candidate do more than just say they support the Second Amendment? We want to support people who will actively work to protect and restore our Second Amendment rights.
2. The viability of the candidate’s campaign. By endorsing a candidate, we are asking our members and supporters to donate money and time to their campaign. Our endorsement is not just a voting guide. We will not ask our members to give time and money to a candidate who does not have the proper infrastructure in place to win or has not done enough to raise the money needed to get their message to voters.
3. The candidate’s character. Even if a candidate is pro-Second Amendment and has a viable campaign, if they have done something that is serious and verifiable to prove they do not have the character to hold public office, we will not endorse. How can we trust a candidate to do the right thing on the Second Amendment if they cannot do the right thing personally or professionally?
If you have a favorite local candidate or are a candidate, please contact us or email us at [email protected] We want to make sure candidates get our questionnaire and meet with each candidate. Once a candidate is endorsed, IEGO will encourage our members to volunteer for and donate to endorsed candidates. IEGO spends money on behalf of our endorsed candidates to make sure their voters vote for them.
Riding Shotgun with Charlie #153 with Michael A. Schwartz, Host of Gun Owners Radio and Executive Director of San Diego County Gun Owners
This past June I finally got to California to film some shows. One of the folks I absolutely had to have was Michael Schwartz. He’s the founder of San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO) and co-host of Gun Owners Radio (GOR). I booked a trip with John Petrolino (RSWC #093) and we headed to SDCGO’s Gun Prom 2022. It was not just an amazing event, but John was awarded the Media Figure of the Year. The day after the event, Michael and I had a chance to get him on the show. After all, I have been on GOR a time or two. And the night we filmed this show, John and I were able to be in-studio for the show. You can get the link here. https://youtu.be/sRKiSkbB3hY

Become a #NotMeIE Ambassador
The #NotMeIE program is a mentor/mentee referral service run by women for women to help them:
Obtain firearms training
Get assistance in choosing and purchasing a firearm
Obtain a CCW
How does the program work?
A potential client can fill out the application for service on our website. Once received, the project manager reviews the application and assigns the client to an Ambassador. An Ambassador then contacts the client to begin the process of walking them through whatever their firearm needs are. After the client has been successfully helped, their case is closed, and the Ambassador is given a new client to work with. Some of our Ambassadors are also NRA certified trainers. They are very knowledgeable in all aspects of firearms training and purchasing. IEGO also offers an online CCW seminar once a month. Check the IEGO website for upcoming dates. If you are an experienced gun owner and are interested in becoming an Ambassador for the #NotMeIE program please reach out to Karla at [email protected]
