Friend–
I’m sending the below again because it’s critical we step up and fight back against the DOJ.
Just weeks after we filed a Public Records Act demand with the Department of Justice to get more information about their massive gun owner data leak, we got our response: AG Rob Bonta and Gavin Newsom would rather hide than be held accountable.
“In response to a PRA request, the Department may withhold certain records when the public interest served by not disclosing the records clearly outweighs the public interest,” they wrote.
This means we have to prepare to fight back.
It’s CRITICAL that Gavin Newsom and AG Rob Bonta are held accountable for putting targets on the back of gun owners in California, and we have to be ready to fight back when we get our response.
The Department of Justice has an army of lawyers chomping at the bit to fight back and block us from holding their boss accountable, which means it’s even more critical for us to be prepared, and we need to raise AT LEAST another $6500 more to prepare our eventual response.

November is right around the corner! Do you have any local candidates you want us to endorse or are you a candidate?
Endorsing candidates is an important part of the political process and is a big step towards Inland Empire Gun Owners goal of electing only people who respect our Second Amendment rights.
For IEGO, every day is election season and the next election is always right around the corner. IEGO is a unique political organization because we focus entirely on local Second Amendment issues. Because we are unique, it is important to understand the specifics of who, how, and why we endorse.
IEGO endorses only county and city level candidates. We do not endorse state or federal candidates because other organizations do a great job already and we do not want to duplicate efforts. We only endorse candidates for City Council, School Board, County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff, and other local boards like water, fire, etc.
IEGO’s Criteria for Endorsements:
1. The candidate’s stance on the Second Amendment and Second Amendment issues. Does the candidate oppose gun bans, ammunition registration, and accessory bans? Does the candidate support issuing carry permits for the purpose of self-defense? And will the candidate do more than just say they support the Second Amendment? We want to support people who will actively work to protect and restore our Second Amendment rights.
2. The viability of the candidate’s campaign. By endorsing a candidate, we are asking our members and supporters to donate money and time to their campaign. Our endorsement is not just a voting guide. We will not ask our members to give time and money to a candidate who does not have the proper infrastructure in place to win or has not done enough to raise the money needed to get their message to voters.
3. The candidate’s character. Even if a candidate is pro-Second Amendment and has a viable campaign, if they have done something that is serious and verifiable to prove they do not have the character to hold public office, we will not endorse. How can we trust a candidate to do the right thing on the Second Amendment if they cannot do the right thing personally or professionally?
If you have a favorite local candidate or are a candidate, please contact us or email us at [email protected] We want to make sure candidates get our questionnaire and meet with each candidate. Once a candidate is endorsed, IEGO will encourage our members to volunteer for and donate to endorsed candidates. IEGO spends money on behalf of our endorsed candidates to make sure their voters vote for them.
Members Corner: From Arrest to Advocate: My Story
This is a guest post written by IEGO Board Member Michael Cooke.
Inland Empire Gun Owners allows me to actively promote our Second Amendment rights within the community. I am honored to be an Advisory Board member of IEGO and serve as Outreach Coordinator. I’m passionate about preserving and protecting those rights, with a unique perspective regarding my right to keep and bear arms which has led me into Second Amendment activism.
In the late 80s, I became active in shooting sports and enjoyed going to the range and shooting trap. By 1995, I had amassed quite a collection. Unfortunately, I made a series of poor decisions which led to a severe substance abuse problem with methamphetamine. Within a very short period, my addiction overwhelmed my entire life. I sold nearly all my firearms to a local pawn shop for money needed to support my habit, and the remaining few were stolen.
As a result of my drug problem, I became involved in the manufacture of methamphetamine for the sole purpose of using as much of the drug as I possibly could. This eventually led to my arrest by the Riverside Police Department in 1997. Up until this point, I had never been in legal trouble, and the DA offered me three years in the California Department of Corrections. My parents decided to hire a very influential attorney to represent me who was quickly able to negotiate a plea deal to a lesser charge. Although it was still a felony, I gladly accepted, having already spent 33 days in jail. The conviction resulted in a mandatory two-month in-patient drug treatment program and a whole list of other conditions, including the lifetime prohibition of firearms possession.
From the day of my arrest, I resolved to do what was necessary to avoid ever being in such a position again….

Big News – We Just Heard Back from the DOJ!
A few weeks ago, millions of gun owners’ personal data were exposed on the internet, putting a giant target on the back of gun owners statewide.
We took immediate action by kicking off our multi-point plan to hold AG Bonta and Newsom accountable – primarily because we had to!
The mainstream media couldn’t wait to sweep this under the rug, and the anti-gunners in Sacramento certainly don’t want to keep talking about this.
That’s why we filed Public Records Act demands to the Department of Justice to open their doors, books, and emails and give us the information we need to the bottom of the massive gun owner data breach.
We just heard back from the DOJ – and it’s exactly what we’d been hearing from our sources: no.
“In response to a PRA request, the Department may withhold certain records when the public interest served by not disclosing the records clearly outweighs the public interest,” they wrote.
Imagine that – anti-gun Sacramento politicians refusing to be transparent about a massive data breach targeting gun owners.
All of this simply means a legal fight is imminent, and we need to be able to fully execute our plan to hold AG Rob Bonta and Gavin Newsom accountable for their failure to protect our private personal data.
The Public Records Act gives the public the right to access communications, documents, and more about almost anything the government, and it’s our biggest tool other than lawsuits to force them to comply.
Unfortunately, government politicians and bureaucrats do whatever they can to slow-roll or outright deny these requests — particularly when the request seeks information that makes them look bad.
Bottom line: if we have to sue to force them to comply, we will do whatever it takes!
This PRA demand is just one part of our multi-point plan to hold AG Rob Bonta and Gavin Newsom accountable, and it’s well underway – but all of these things don’t come cheap.
That’s why we need to count on your support to expose the truth about the gun owner data breach and hold Rob Bonta and Gavin Newsom accountable.
We cannot let this wanton breach of the public trust go unanswered.
Please — chip in and help us fight back.
A Special Message from the Executive Director
Dear IEGO Members and Supporters,
By now you have heard about the database leak by the State of California. The name, address, and age of everyone who has a California CCW was posted to a California DOJ webpage for the entire world to see.
This is completely and totally unacceptable. Whether it was incompetence or malfeasance, it is horribly offensive. We will do our part as an organization to ensure there is an investigation, people are held accountable, and appropriate lawsuits happen.
I have received more emails, texts, phone calls, and messages about this database debacle than anything ever in the history of IEGO. We hear you, and we are just as outraged.
What can you do now?
While lawsuits and investigations are being coordinated and considered, this is a great time for you to evaluate all that you are doing to remain safe and secure against all attacks. As bad as this is, there are activities people do every day that put them at far more risk of being the victim of crime. Are you doing everything you can do to make sure you and your family stay safe?
Consider security systems and cameras at your house.
Make sure all your virus software is installed and updated.
Consult with security professionals to make sure your home, computer, and business are all protected.
Monitor your credit. One of the best ways to protect yourself from identity theft is to monitor your credit history. To obtain free copies of your credit reports from the three major credit bureaus go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com.
Consider placing a free credit freeze on your credit report. Identity thieves will not be able to open a new credit account in your name while the freeze is in place. You can place a credit freeze by contacting each of the three major credit bureaus:
Place a fraud alert on your credit report. A fraud alert helps protect you against the possibility of someone opening new credit accounts in your name. A fraud alert lasts 90 days and can be renewed. To post a fraud alert on your credit file, you must contact one of the three major credit reporting agencies listed above. Keep in mind that if you place a fraud alert with any one of the three major credit reporting agencies, the alert will be automatically added by the other two agencies as well.
Additional Resources. If you are a victim of identity theft, contact your local police department or sheriff’s office right away. You may also report identity theft and generate a recovery plan using the Federal Trade Commission’s website at gov. For more information and resources visit the Attorney General’s website at oag.ca.gov/idtheft.
There are endless sources, articles, books, and professionals that can give you advice. Everyone’s situation is different, but the worst thing you can do is nothing. The risk of you being targeted due to this CCW data dump by the state is likely to be low, but use this as a catalyst to make sure you are doing all that you should to stay safe. If anything does happen, contact law enforcement and IEGO immediately. We are happy to help in any way we are able.
Together, We Will Win. It is not just our motto. It is how we live. Let us know if you need help.
Thank you.

Refuse to be a Victim By Desi Bergman, NotMeSD Project Manager
As of July 2022, the San Diego Union Tribune reported that the current response time to a Priority One police emergency call in San Diego County is 40 minutes. That’s right, 40 minutes! This means if you are being domestically abused, if your life is threatened, if your child goes missing, or if someone commits a home invasion or home robbery, the police will arrive approximately 40 minutes later. In these examples of Priority One calls, a lot can happen in 5 minutes, let alone 40 minutes waiting for the police to arrive.
NotMe understands that police officers do a great job, but we also understand that police cannot be there to save us. Rather, the police will show up after the crime has been committed and take a police report and outline the body on the ground in front of me. I will do everything in my power to keep the body being outlined from being mine, starting with being a gun owner and being properly trained on how to use my firearms. I understand that I need to be my own protector because if my life is being threatened, I cannot call 911 and expect that they will save me; rather, I must save myself.
The #NotMeIE program is a mentor/mentee referral service run by women for women to help them:
Obtain firearms training
Get assistance in choosing and purchasing a firearm
Obtain a CCW
How does the program work?
A potential client can fill out the application for service on our website. Once received, the project manager reviews the application and assigns the client to an Ambassador. An Ambassador then contacts the client to begin the process of walking them through whatever their firearm needs are. After the client has been successfully helped, their case is closed, and the Ambassador is given a new client to work with. Some of our Ambassadors are also NRA certified trainers. They are very knowledgeable in all aspects of firearms training and purchasing. IEGO also offers an online CCW seminar once a month. Check the IEGO website for upcoming dates. If you are an experienced gun owner and are interested in becoming an Ambassador for the #NotMeIE program please reach out to Karla at [email protected]
