8th Annual Handgun/Rifle Charity Course – Firearms Training, Fun, and Fundraising for a Noble Cause

The 8th Annual Handgun/Rifle Charity Course is now behind us. The event is the brainchild of Lance Reeter of the Shooter’s Hangout.  Lance and his fiancé Tatiana plan, organize, and run the entire event. The event is hosted by Front Sight Firearms Training Institute in Pahrump, Nevada. The Charity Course provides top notch firearms training and raises money for leukemia and lymphoma research.

Attendees register for the event through the event website. Participants can choose either a two day or four day handgun, shotgun, or rifle course. Bring your favorite firearms or rent equipment from Front Sight.

The classes average about thirty people being trained by a team of four instructors. Each class is divided into two relays so there is typically an instructor for every four or five students. Students range in experience from beginner to expert, but the instruction, a series of short lectures and live shooting, is designed to accommodate everyone. Beginners won’t be overwhelmed; experts won’t be bored.

Students are tested at the end of the course and are awarded a certificate of achievement, graduate, or distinguished graduate rating dependent on score. The test involves shooting under time pressure from various distances and clearing malfunctions. The test is very low stress and is intended to help each student measure progress. There is also a fun shooting competition for the students on the last day.

I chose the four day tactical shotgun course this year. I won a Winchester 1300 shotgun from the raffle at last year’s event, so the shotgun course was an obvious choice for me. I do quite a bit of handgun shooting but have no tactical shotgun experience. I was a complete beginner on the shotgun range, but I finished the course with a solid foundation in tactical shotgun. Shooting birdshot, buckshot, and slugs for four days from various shooting positions was an eye opening experience. I learned a lot more about my shotgun and what accessories I need to pick up.

This year’s event was one of the most successful to date. Two hundred ninety one people registered raising $51,550 for research to fight leukemia/lymphoma. Several precision rifles and shotguns along with a number of handguns were raffled off at the event. Registration for the event is only $250 ($50 for those having Front Sight memberships). That’s $250 for four days of world class firearms training!

Plan to join us at this family friendly event next year. Go to the event website and sign up on the mailing list. You’ll receive the exact dates for next year’s event along with all the registration information. Come out, get some great training, have fun, and help raise money for a very worthy cause.
